The First Gen Hunter Podcast

There's a lot going on in Colorado  for hunters these days and there was just some big news that was released last week about nonresident hunters being able to buy over the counter elk tags in Colorado. Alex and I break this down along with a host of other topics.

The first ever cohost on The First Gen Hunter Podcast was my buddy Brandon Martin of The Hunt Fish Life. Brandon and I have long dreamed about buying our own pieces of ground to manage for hunting opportunities, and Brandon has finally done it! He purchased a 40 acre piece of ground in his home state of Delaware where his family tree has been planted for over 400 years! Talk about being connected to a place! Brandon walked me through the search for a good hunting property, the finances for buying one, and the features he loves the most about his new place to hunt. It's a great conversation that makes a dream most of have feel more attainable.

Judd McCullum is my brother from another mother. It's crazy to me how much we are interested in the same types of curiosities. In this episode Judd breaks down his recent fishing trip adventures in one of the most pristine wilderness areas in North America, as well as the recent controversy surrounding the Illinois Bobcat Hunting Season. This is a great one where we all come away better by listening to what Judd has to say.

Jake Debow of New England Naturals is an authority on trapping. He builds his life around the outdoors and spends much of his time hunting, but trapping is the thing he is known for. I had the privilege to sit down and learn from Jake about the trapper lifestyle- its history, its current popularity and where it's headed in the future. It truly was one of my favorite interviews I've recorded in a while, and I think Jake's perspectives will draw you in as well.

Riley Rozendaal is one of the most interesting people I know. In his early 20s was brave enough to teach himself how to raise dermestid beetle colonies to take on taxidermy work cleaning skulls for euro mounts, but even more impressive than that, Riley started his own bison ranch. This episode features conversation around what it takes to maintain a dermestid colony, and what to expect from them for cleaning skulls. We also talk about how Riley got into bison ranching, and the many challenges that come with raising 1500+ pound animals. Finally we wrap the conversation talking about Riley's multiple year pursuit of a giant old buck.

In my opinion Sam Lungren is one of the most intelligent voices in the outdoor space. He has an abundance of experience from all over the world and the drive to always explore more. From working on a commercial fishing boat in Alaska, to catching some of the most exotic fish in South America as well as hunting across the American West, Sam has a game bag filled with stories that will inspire you to tackle your own larger than life adventures.

James Doanes is an American Hunter who has been pursuing his dreams of tagging every huntable big game animal in his home state of Colorado. So far his quest has yielded a bull moose, an antelope, a bull elk, and most recently a rocky mountain bighorn sheep. This is an excellent interview with a very thoughtful hunter who has done what it takes to become an excellent hunter.
